Potholes in city cause major concern

first_imgA pothole in one of the capital city’s busiest streets has, over the past few months, grown to become a major bugbear, affecting not only minibus and car operators, but pedestrians who traverse the roadway on a regular basis.The rapidly-expanding pothole along the Avenue of the Republic in GeorgetownThe pothole in question is the one along the Avenue of the Republic and is quite a visible hazard. A number of road users would have made several reports to the relevant authorities, but nothing has been done.This eyesore would normally have motorists travelling in the southern direction swerving away so as to not cause any damage to their vehicles, but despite these personal efforts, it is still feared that accidents could happen especially in cases where heavy-duty vehicles would not be able to avoid such potholes.A concerned motorist who asked to remain anonymous told Guyana Times that the rapidly-deteriorating hole should be fixed urgently, citing the numerous road accidents involving both pedestrians and vehicles.“The people who are in charge of our roads should take road safety much more seriously as well as these small things which cause major accidents…because in the long run, many persons die or get injured only because potholes— especially ones like this – are lying around and not being fixed nor given much attention.”Additionally, based on concerns raised, manholes are also considered to be public hazards owing to recent incidents of persons falling into them and being injured. As such, persons are appealing to the relevant authorities to look into these matters.When contacted, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Mayor and City Council, Debra Lewis was unable to give a comment on fixing the potholes along the roadways.last_img
